On 28 June 2017 the East Devon Villages Plan, including supporting evidence and consultation responses, was submitted to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government (via the Planning Inspectorate). The East Devon Villages Plan will guide development in certain East Devon settlements.
the main document that sets out the planning strategy for East Devon is the East Devon Local Plan 2013 - 2031, which was adopted in 2016.
West Hill Parish Council was created on 1 April 2017 following a Community Governance Review which resulted in West Hill separating from Ottery St Mary parish. West Hill has seven Parish Councillors and a population of around 2,300.
During the 19th century, West Hill was a small settlement. St Michael’s church was finished in 1846, and the Old School opened in 1876. In the late 1960’s, building progressed rapidly for a few years until the 1970’s when the infrastructure failed to keep pace and development slowed. Potter’s Country Market (now McColl’s) opened in 1971.
In the mid 1980’s a new Village Hall was built, closely followed by the new Primary School. In recent years, new development has continued slowly. West Hill is proudly known as “the woodland village”.
